How Fibron Cable helped customers with their subsea challenges

Hexatronic Feb 28, 2025

Our Harsh Environment group has a strong capability in the supply of underwater cables for a range of applications. The cables are typically bespoke in design and may comprise almost any combination of fiber-optics, copper-based power and communication cables along with a selection of hoses carrying high-pressure chemicals and hydraulics or lower pressures of nitrogen, oxygen and water. This article shows how Hexatronic Group company Fibron Cable helped two customers tackle their subsea challenges.

Customer case 1:

Our customer, Ocean Infinity A/S, approached us as they searched for a reliable supplier of cables for the fit-out of their fleet of Armada vessels for the support of the offshore energy industry. These highly advanced vessels enable Ocean Infinity to perform tech-enabled, lean-crewed operations for a safer and greener maritime future. The cables needed to be strong enough to handle large loads in deep waters but still thin to minimize the space required to store the cables on the vessel. Fibron Cable, part of Hexatronic since June 2023, was able to adapt their ultra thin insulated power cable technology from the ROV industry to meet the challenge in record time. The vessels support a wide range of services in the offshore environment, including the drilling of core samples in the ocean seabed (CPT) to assess the ground conditions for the design of infrastructure such as offshore wind farms.

Customer case 2:

Our customer, DMT in Germany, is a major construction partner in the €10bn Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link project, which will connect Denmark and Germany with an 18km underwater tunnel. When completed in 2029, it will be the longest combined road and rail tunnel worldwide. Fibron Cable was approached by our customer to supply fully armoured underwater umbilicals that combine power and communication cables alongside high-pressure hydraulics. These umbilicals provide technology support to the incredibly precise equipment that is used to install the underwater concrete sections on the seabed.

Our umbilicals with armor bodies and vertebrae bend restrictors were delivered to exacting customer standards and form a critical part of the installation tooling suite that is required to complete delivery of the project. We continue to support the project through our expert aftersales and offsite termination team. The Hexatronic Harsh Environment team's continued involvement in Denmark's biggest construction project is a testament to the breadth of our expertise and the versatility of our manufacturing and design capability.
