In 2021, Hexatronic Group started to support a project initiated by Hand in Hand, a non-profit organization that works with entrepreneurship models to reduce poverty. The project is proceeding, and several partaking groups are now on their way to developing their business further.
The project in Chawia village in Kenya uses a unique entrepreneurship model aimed at women among the poorest parts of the population that focuses on strengthening the people. The entrepreneurship model strives to support them to improve their lives by helping them to start and run small and profitable businesses to earn a living, become more independent, and create job opportunities – for themselves and others.
Running a business in Chawia comes with many challenges. The women depend on traditional occupations and crafts that have been established and passed on for generations. In Eastern Africa, handmade weaved baskets are a common work to generate sales to make a living. Unfortunately, the market is saturated, and it is therefore challenging for them to be able to sell their handicraft.
These women have been connected with Hand in Hand and joined the project to be able to receive support to develop their businesses. Through Hand in Hand, the women in Chawia are offered entrepreneurial training and learn the impact of diversification to find a position in the market. The training within the project introduces the group to entrepreneurial skills, financial management, value-chain development, climate resilience practiced, and more. It supports them in finding alternative paths for their business, making their position in the market more unique and strengthening their income source.
Watch this video with women living and operating in Chawia. They share business challenges, learnings from the project with Hand in Hand, and their hopes and beliefs for a better future for themselves and their families.
