MPY deploys Hexatronic Microduct ECO to connect homes in Finnish towns

MPY is rolling out FTTH (Fiber To The Home) networks to several towns in Finland to provide the residents with all the opportunities that high-speed internet access can bring. We visited their project in Heinola, a city in southern Finland, to hear more about how they work with sustainability, solution choice, and their partnership with Hexatronic.

MPY is a Finnish network owner, operator, and service provider with head office in Mikkeli. The company is a true pioneer in telecommunications with a heritage dating back over 135 years. In 1888, MPY began installing the first telephone lines in the Southern Savonia region, and 100 years later, they started building fiber connections.

In the partnership with Hexatronic, MPY found a companion with an equal interest in sustainable solutions. For most of their FTTH projects, MPY now chooses microduct systems instead of traditional direct-buried cables. Due to its smaller size, the microcabling technology reduces the plastic materials consumed in production and the volume and weight in transportation. The system is also fully scalable to match future needs. Once the microduct system is in the ground, there is no need for further excavations to be able to upgrade the network.

In Heinola, MPY took it one step further and selected Hexatronic Microduct ECO, a new generation of microduct that will help MPY reduce the project's carbon footprint. Most of the product's material is recycled and the ducts are produced at Hexatronics' facility in Sweden, which is powered by certified renewable energy. You can read all about Microduct ECO here
